Electronic Communications Amendment Act Signed

The Presidency

The Electronic Communications Amendment Act (2014) has been signed by President Jacob Zuma and published in the Government Gazette this week.

Provisions in the act which amends the 2005 act were required in line with technology advances and the liberalisation process of the electronic communications sector.

Natural Scientific Professions Council Updates Fees

South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions

The South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNSP) has published revised fees for registration and annual subscription as appropriate for different categories of professional registration.

These updated fees for the 2014/15 year which are made in terms of the Natural Scientific Professions Act (2003) are effective from 1 April 2014.

Employment Services Act Signed

The Presidency

The Employment Services Act (2014) which was signed by President Jacob Zuma on 3 April 2014 has been published in the Government Gazette this week.

The new act aims to repeal all the employment services provisions contained in the Skills Development Act (1998) and to provide for a range of measures to promote employment and to also regulate the employment of foreigners.

New Levy for Electricity Generators

Department of Energy

Licensed generators of electricity must now pay the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) 0.6709c/kWh.

The new levy was published in Government Gazette 37490.

ICASA Amendment Act Signed

The Presidency

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa Amendment Act was signed by President Jacob Zuma on 3 April 2014 and published in the Government Gazette this week.

The purpose of the act is to clarify the powers and duties of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA).

Tourism Act Signed

The Presidency

President Zuma has signed the Tourism Bill into law.

Parliament passed the bill and sent it for assent in March 2014.

Tax Ombud Launched

National Treasury

Taxpayers now have a Tax Ombud in place to deal with tax-related complaints.

The finance minister, Pravin Gordhan, launched the Tax Ombud office yesterday.
